Columbia University Summer Program on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Policy

The Aurora Education Foundation is pleased to be able to offer one full scholarship for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student or graduate to participate in the 2023 International Summer Program on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Policy (“the Program”) which will be run by Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights and the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race.  The Program is scheduled to run from May-June 2023.  “The Program really exceeded my expectations!  The diversity of the participants and speakers meant that we were provided with an invaluable opportunity to learn about a very diverse range of issues facing Indigenous people globally, and we heard about innovative work being done in Indigenous communities around the world.  In particular, I enjoyed hearing from the Sámi people about the ways in which they are working through issues relating to protection of intellectual property, being able to continue traditional methods of reindeer herding, and access to Indigenous language classes for their children.  And we heard from the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, who sadly said that she was very disappointed in Australia’s treatment of Indigenous people.  Whilst many participants outlined the painful battles, both past and present, that the Indigenous peoples of their countries have endured and continue to endure, one thing was clear – the resilience of Indigenous peoples globally, and I think that that left us all feeling inspired and determined to continue to work to effect positive change.  And I think that having the network of new friends made through this Program means that we can continue to learn from each other long into the future.”
